About This Event
Learn the basics of millinery from international acclaimed hat designer and milliner Karen Morris.
Students will learn hat shapes, basic techniques and tools for making a fascinator/headpiece, basic millinery stitches as well as different trimmings for finishing a hat.
Each student will leave with one finished fascinator/headpiece at the end of class and learn essential skills from the millinery arts.
This class is intended for beginners/intermediate and some basic sewing skills are recommended. Recommended for ages 16+. Registration cut off is March 8 to ensure materials are ready for all participants.
Schedule:
- 9:30 am - 12:30 pm: Presentation on millinery as an art form, demonstration of blocking headpiece base, folding and curving ribbon and trimmings. Trimming options: single feathers and feather mounts, sinamay straw bows, sinamay straw bias, and floral trims. Student work time.
- One hour for lunch on your own onsite or on nearby Selby Ave.
- 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm: Removing blocked hat base from hat blocks & finishing edge, wiring and binding the hat base, assembling the headpieces with trims. Student work time.
Materials included with purchase price:
- One yard of sinamay straw
- Trimmings, steel wire, ribbon, single feathers, feather mounts and silk flowers
- Styrofoam mannequin
- One hat box for storage
Please Bring:
- A basic sewing kit including needles of various sizes.
- Lunch/Snacks/Water Bottle
