The Minnesota Historical Society is committed to program evaluation as a valuable tool for strengthening the quality of our exhibits, programs and events through measuring and improving outcomes for those we serve. The General Visitor Survey is one important method for learning about who visits our historic sites & museums, what their experience was like and what impact it had for them.

Student Qualifications

Must be a senior undergraduate or graduate level student, with a passion for history, informal learning and/or evaluation. Must possess the following: 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • High comfort approaching and interacting with the general public
  • Ability to multitask and take work direction from multiple supervisors
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team setting
  • Detail-oriented
  • Motivated, with strong work ethic
Student Responsibilities

Intern tasks will include:

  • Conduct visitor intercept surveys and distribute paper surveys to visitors during a variety of times, including weekdays, weekends and holidays ( Memorial Day Weekend, July 4, and Labor Day).
  • data entry into online survey database Alchemer
  • Setting up/taking down the “survey station”.
  • Create charts and graphs for visual display of data in summary reports detailing evaluation findings.
  • Data analysis and reporting. 
Knowledge Intern is expected to gain
  • Understanding of museum visitor experiences, outcomes and impacts
  • Knowledge of program evaluation in a museum/historic site environment
  • Understanding of survey design
  • Experience working with museum professionals and program evaluators
  • Experience with data visualization and reporting

Writing sample (paper, report, or presentation)
